Ostrich Facts

Name: Struthio camelus

AKA: Ostrich (pronounced os-trich)

Currently at the Farm: One African Red, a male named “Bojangles”

Location: Originally native to Africa, they are now farmed successfully in over 50 countries!

Fun Fact: Ostriches are the second fastest animal in the world, and the fastest 2 legged animal, and can run at 45 miles per hour (70 km. per hour). They can maintain this speed for at least 30 minutes.

Stats: The African Red, like Bojangles, is the largest of the three ostrich breeds. They can reach up to 9 feet tall and weigh up to 340 pounds!!

Strange But True: Although seen frequently in movies and cartoons, an ostrich does not bury it’s head in the sand. Although they will lie flat on the ground if scared.

How Do You Like your Eggs?: Ostrich eggs are the largest of all eggs, which are, on average, 6 inches long, 5 inches wide, and weigh 3 pounds! That’s equivalent to 18 chicken eggs. Now that’s a BIG omelette.

Walking with Dinosaurs: Ostrich fossils have been found which date back over 120 million years. That’s when t-rex roamed the earth!
